Pow! Wow! Hawai‘i 2014 Portrait

2014 marks the second year we’ve been invited as partners to participate in the annual Pow! Wow! Hawai‘i festival. Upon making arrangements to fly out to Hawai‘i, we let some of our friends and colleagues know what we had brewing. Two of our good friends decided to make the journey with us. Garvin Ha, film-maker and director, and rhyme-sayer Andre Travis (a.k.a. Dre Trav from WatsToday). The following images paint a broad portrait of what the Pow! Wow! and Oahu experience was for us. The images take you from Brendan Monroe’s studio in Oakland a week before Pow! Wow!, to a coconut stand on the eastern-north shore of Oahu one week later.

Over the last 3 years, Pow! Wow! and Hawai‘i have proven consistently to offer amazing experiences, lessons, and opportunities for me; for reasons both obvious and others not so obvious. The Hawaiian people, place, and culture is an incredibly rich, deep, and diverse one. Mix that up with an international consortium creatives, a tight delegation of home-town representatives, and what you have is a cocktail more potent than a molotov. Nevermind hype, the aloha is real.
